Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen have reportedly abducted two young men along the Ughelli/Olomu/Jeremi road in Ughelli South local government area of Delta State recently.
The commander and chairman of Olomu central vigilante, Daniel Arigi told journalists that the suspected Fulani herdsmen at about 9pm blocked the Ughelli-Olomu road by Ophorigbalacommunity robbing road users of their belongings.
The local vigilante commander said, an SUV Jeep with three occupants ran into the Fulani herdsmen who blocked the road and fired several bullets at their cars hitting the tyres and windscreen of the vehicle.
He said, two of the occupants were abducted by the arms-wielding herdsmen and were taken into the bush after being disposed of their personal items and the vehicle thoroughly searched while one of the occupants was rescued by the vigilantes.
Arigi stated that, their modus of operation is to come out in the night or very early in the morning and hide by the bush, and the moment they see any vehicle approaching the bad spot, they come out shooting sporadically at the vehicle and in the process either kill the occupant or bring the vehicle to a stop before abducting or raping their victims.
He disclosed that several attacks have occurred on that same spot, and some have also lost their lives in the process.
According to him, they were on patrol when they heard the sporadic gunshots, saying that, immediately after rescuing one of the victims, he called the Otu-Jeremi DPO, who responded immediately before the shattered vehicle was taken to the station.
When contacted, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovokporayen said, I will call you back but never did before going to the press”.
Meanwhile reliable source confirmed that the two abducted persons are from Kiagbodo in Burutu local government.
